Dalitso Kabambe criticizes Malawi government austerity and corruption

UTM Party leader Dalitso Kabambe has criticized the Malawian government’s austerity measures, arguing they will fail unless leadership demonstrates genuine commitment through concrete action. Kabambe stated that authorities frequently announce plans to reduce government expenditure and promote fiscal discipline but fail to adhere to these measures themselves.

Kabambe also issued a sharp critique of the country’s economic management and anti-corruption efforts. He described corrupt officials as “parasites” and accused the government of weaponizing institutions like the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Police, and the Financial Intelligence Unit against political rivals rather than allowing them to operate with autonomy.

Regarding the economy, Kabambe highlighted failed monetary policies that have led to severe foreign exchange shortages, hindering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from importing goods. He noted a significant disparity between official and black-market exchange rates, which he cited as evidence of a failing system for ordinary Malawians and entrepreneurs.
