Dallas Cowboys revamp defense with rookie Caleb Downs and PJ Locke

The Dallas Cowboys entered the offseason focused on fixing a defense that ranked among the league's worst in 2025 and kept the team out of the playoffs. They traded up to select safety Caleb Downs with the 11th overall pick and retained veteran defensive back PJ Locke, who has been working extra hours with Downs after practice. New defensive coordinator Christian Parker is expected to deploy Downs in multiple roles, from deep safety to hybrid linebacker, as the unit seeks greater versatility and communication.

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb praised the revamped defense during OTAs, calling it “annoying” and “tricky” for opponents because of its improved communication and scheme complexity. Both players and coaches believe the defensive upgrades could help the Cowboys return to the postseason in the 2026 season.
