Dallas judge delays custody ruling in surrogacy dispute involving newborn

A legal battle over the custody and medical care of a newborn baby is unfolding in a Dallas courtroom involving a surrogate mother and the child's biological parents. The infant, born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, has undergone his first of three required emergency heart surgeries.

Surrogate mother McKenna Westwas, who fled to Texas to give birth after refusing the biological parents' request to terminate the pregnancy following the diagnosis, is currently barred from seeing the child or making medical decisions due to a temporary restraining order. The biological parents, Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar, testified that the baby has struggled with breathing and required a blood transfusion following the initial operation.

Dallas County District Judge Ashley Wysocki has extended the restraining order for 14 days, with a ruling on custody expected within that timeframe. The infant is currently in the custody of his biological parents.
