Dallas man charged in shooting of off-duty officer

Darriyous Johunkin, 33, has been charged with second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the shooting of an off-duty Arlington police officer in Dallas.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on a Sunday in the 3100 block of Pentagon Parkway. According to an arrest affidavit, officers observed a white Dodge Charger running a stop sign. Upon being signaled by an air horn, the driver stopped and identified himself as Adrian Abner, an off-duty officer with the Arlington Police Department. Abner reported he had been shot in the stomach.

Johunkin returned to the scene and informed police that he was involved in the shooting following a family dispute. During questioning, Johunkin claimed that Abner had shot at him first and that he returned fire, striking Abner. While the motive for the meeting between the two men remains unclear, investigators charged Johunkin after evidence at the scene supported his involvement. Abner was transported to Methodist Central Hospital for surgery to treat serious bodily injuries.
