Dallas Museum of Art to host major Pompeii artifact exhibition

The Dallas Museum of Art will host the United States debut of “Journey Through Pompeii: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples” this December. The exhibition features more than 160 preserved artifacts from the ancient Roman towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabia, which were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

The collection includes a variety of items such as marble sculptures, frescoes, mosaics, stucco reliefs, and domestic wares. The exhibition is organized into thematic galleries covering aspects of Roman life, including politics, sports, dining traditions, and domesticity. Notable pieces include “Fourth Style” frescoes depicting Roman myths and a black-and-white mosaic of a skeleton carrying wine jugs, which served as a memento mori.
