Dallas Wings coach defends reporter following online harassment

Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez expressed strong support for independent reporter Grant Afseth following reports of severe online harassment and threats. Afseth, who covers the Wings for Dallas Hoops Journal, recently announced he would step away from the beat after receiving disturbing messages, including one that allegedly threatened extreme violence against him and his family.

During a postgame press conference following a victory over the Toronto Tempo, Fernandez praised Afseth’s professionalism and dedication, noting that the reporter was “passionate, talented, [and] prepared.” Fernandez emphasized that such behavior has no place in professional sports, stating, “What he went through, nobody who covers any sports team should go through.”

The coach also highlighted the potential dangers for players if such aggression is directed at coaches and media, expressing hope that with community support, Afseth can return to his role covering the team.
