Dallin H. Oaks leads LDS Church through temple expansion and leadership scrutiny
During his first year as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the death of Russell M. Nelson, Dallin H. Oaks has overseen an acceleration in temple construction and dedication. Since taking office, 13 temples have been consecrated and 18 new construction projects have begun. The year 2026 is projected to be one of the most active years for temple inaugurations in the movement's history. President Oaks personally consecrated temples in Burley, Idaho, and Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
A notable development includes the official site plan announcement for the Otavalo temple in Ecuador, the first international sanctuary announced under his leadership. Additionally, the church has shifted the responsibility of proclaiming temple locations to local leaders.
In a separate context regarding his leadership, President Oaks recently addressed an audience at the Washington National Cathedral, suggesting that the U.S. Constitution compels a divided people to form coalitions. This stance has drawn criticism from some observers who argue that his calls for compromise and loyalty to principles lack substance because they fail to address specific contemporary political injustices or social harms.
