Dalmatian gastronomy emerges as a key driver for regional tourism
Local gastronomy is becoming a decisive factor for tourists in Dalmatia, with more than one-third of visitors choosing destinations based on food offerings. In Zadar, culinary experts and restaurateurs emphasize the importance of Mediterranean cuisine and high-quality local ingredients to maintain regional identity and avoid generic fast food.
Restaurateurs are increasingly sourcing products from local family farms (OPG) to ensure freshness and reduce carbon footprints. For example, some chefs produce their own vegetables to supply their restaurants, minimizing transport distances to as little as five kilometers. This connection to local producers helps extend the tourist season and secure regional jobs.
Traditional cooking methods, such as 'peka'—a method using a bell-shaped lid to slow-cook meat or seafood—continue to draw significant interest. Social media coverage of traditional dishes like peka, pašticada, and black risotto highlights the growing appeal of authentic Croatian culinary experiences among international travelers.
