Judicial developments reported across Latin America
Various legal and judicial developments are occurring across Latin America. In Mendoza, Argentina, Dalmiro Garay, president of the Supreme Court of Justice, has recused himself from the case involving former Justice Undersecretary Marcelo D'Agostino. D'Agostino faces charges of gender violence and illegal firearm possession. Garay cited his previous professional relationship with D'Agostino during the administration of Alfredo Cornejo as a reason to ensure judicial impartiality.
In Colombia, the Foundation for the Rule of Law (FEDE) has called for the temporary suspension of Constitutional Court magistrate Vladimir Fernández. The request follows allegations of corruption involving the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (Ungrd), where audio recordings reportedly mention Fernández during his time prior to joining the High Court.
Other regional updates include the cancellation of a criminal hearing in Chihuahua, Mexico, following the death of an inmate, Carlos C. J., due to a sudden cardiopulmonary arrest. In Santa Fe, Argentina, the Public Prosecutor's Office and Public Defense are planning to relocate approximately 100 employees to a new judicial annex to optimize services. Additionally, the Diocese of Avellaneda-Lanús has partnered with the Buenos Aires Ministry of Public Prosecution to establish new legal assistance offices for vulnerable populations.
