Dalton Trumbo: The legendary screenwriter and Hollywood Blacklist survivor

Dalton Trumbo, a legendary Hollywood screenwriter, is being commemorated 50 years after his death on September 10, 1976. Trumbo was a prominent figure who faced a decade of marginalization in the film industry due to his political beliefs.

During the era of McCarthyism and the Hollywood Blacklist (1947–1957), Trumbo was labeled an enemy of the state because of his communist ideology and his opposition to the anti-communist hysteria of the time. To continue working, he often used pseudonyms or had others act as his front, leading to instances where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences struggled to identify the true recipient of awards, such as for ‘The Brave One’ in 1957.
