Damen seeks 4.68 billion euros from Germany over F126 frigate cancellation
The Dutch shipyard Damen is seeking approximately 4.68 billion euros from the German government following the cancellation of the F126 frigate procurement program. The claim is based on contractual payment and indemnity rights, which reportedly does not yet include additional damages.
The program, intended to modernize the German Navy with multi-mission vessels, was halted in June 2026 by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius due to significant delays and budget overruns. While the German government attributes the failure to insufficient performance by the contractor, Damen contends that Germany caused the program's failure.
Technical difficulties reportedly emerged as early as 2022, including design flaws in hull blocks and software incompatibilities between Damen’s 3DEXPERIENCE design tool and tools used by partners like Rheinmetall. These issues led to production dropping to 20-30% of planned levels and pushed delivery timelines back to 2031-2032. The dispute is expected to lead to a lengthy legal battle as both sides evaluate potential claims.
