Damien Hirst: The influential British conceptual artist

Damien Hirst is a prominent British conceptual artist and a central figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement. He rose to prominence in the late 1980s after organizing the landmark exhibition ‘Freeze’ while studying at Goldsmiths, University of London. This event drew the attention of influential collector Charles Saatchi.

Hirst’s work is noted for exploring themes of life, death, and science, often utilizing provocative materials. His most famous pieces include a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde, titled ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’, and a diamond-encrusted human skull known as ‘For the Love of God’.

Beyond his artistic output, Hirst is significant for his impact on the art market. In 2008, he became the first artist to sell directly at auction without a gallery intermediary, raising £111 million in two days at Sotheby’s. His career has been marked by both critical acclaim, including winning the Turner Prize in 1995, and controversy regarding animal cruelty and plagiarism.
