Dan Houser discusses Red Dead Redemption's controversial ending

Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has reflected on the controversial decision to kill off the protagonist John Marston at the conclusion of the 2010 title Red Dead Redemption. Houser noted that while the creative team, including lead designer Christian Cantamessa, supported the narrative direction, the decision presented significant production challenges.

The primary concern involved the technical and structural requirements of open-world game design. Because players often return to a game world to complete side content after the main story concludes, the team had to determine how to facilitate this using a different character. To resolve this, the game features a time jump to 1914, allowing players to control John’s son, Jack Marston, in an epilogue.

Houser admitted there was initial anxiety regarding how multi-stage quests would function during the transition between characters, but noted that the resulting epilogue, which focuses on Jack seeking vengeance, was ultimately well-received by players.
