Dan Houser reveals September 11 attacks changed GTA cover art

Dan Houser, co-founder and former vice president of Rockstar Games, revealed that the iconic mosaic-style cover art for Grand Theft Auto 3 was created as a last-minute response to the September 11 attacks.

Originally, the cover featured imagery of burning buildings. However, following the terrorist attacks in New York, the team determined such visuals would be inappropriate for release. Artist Stephen Bliss created the new fragmented, grid-based design in approximately two nights. This specific aesthetic became the signature visual style for the entire franchise, continuing through to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.

In addition to the cover changes, the development team also reviewed and modified certain in-game dialogue and content to ensure sensitivity. The game was subsequently released in October 2001, achieving steady commercial success.
