Dan Saunders exploited ATM glitch to withdraw 1.6 million AUD

Dan Saunders, a bartender from Wangaratta, Victoria, exploited a technical loophole in the Australian banking system to withdraw 1.6 million Australian dollars over a four-month period.

The glitch occurred between 01:00 and 03:00 each night when the banking infrastructure entered an offline mode. During these hours, money transfers were instantly approved by the ATM, but the discrepancy was not reconciled until the system returned to online status during the day. Saunders utilized this window to withdraw funds that were not actually present in his account.

Following the exploitation, Saunders lived a luxury lifestyle involving private jets and high-end hotels. However, he eventually confessed to the bank and surrendered to the police, citing guilt. He was subsequently sentenced to prison and has since returned to his former life.
