Dan Schneider loses ‘Quiet on Set’ defamation appeal

A California appeals court has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider against Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony Pictures, and the producers of the documentary series ‘Quiet on Set’.

Schneider had alleged that the documentary implied he was complicit in or responsible for child sexual abuse. However, a three-judge panel from the Second District Court of Appeal ruled unanimously that the series did not cross the line into defamation. The judges noted that the documentary explicitly distinguished between Schneider’s alleged workplace misconduct—such as harassment and toxic behavior—and the specific acts of sexual abuse attributed to other named individuals.

The court further highlighted that the documentary stated an investigation into Schneider’s conduct found no evidence of child sexual abuse. The ruling reverses a previous decision by an LA Superior Court judge that had denied the defendants’ efforts to have the suit dismissed via anti-SLAPP motions. Schneider, known for creating hits like ‘iCarly’ and ‘Drake & Josh’, had previously called the documentary a ‘hit job’ intended to destroy his reputation.
