Dan Tanasă faces hate speech investigation in Romania
Romanian prosecutor investigators from the Supreme Court are examining a case against AUR deputy Dan Tanasă for alleged incitement to hatred or discrimination. The investigation centers on social media posts and political statements regarding foreign workers in Romania.
Key witnesses in the case include former police officer Marian Godină and the president of the National Peasant Party Maniu – Mihalache. Witnesses have reportedly informed prosecutors that Tanasă’s messages concerning foreign laborers created a state of unrest and carry a high risk of extremism. The case includes scrutiny of a political statement made in May 2026 regarding the replacement of European populations.
The AUR party has defended Tanasă, asserting that he is being punished for his political stance on migration and the Romanian labor market. The party maintains that Tanasă was merely criticizing the mass importation of unskilled labor and did not incite violence. AUR argues that expressing opinions contrary to government migration policy should not constitute a criminal offense and that Tanasă is entitled to a fair trial.
