Dana Carvey defends Shane Gillis following SNL monologue backlash

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Dana Carvey has defended comedian Shane Gillis following backlash to Gillis’ October 10 monologue. During his appearance on the ‘Fly on the Wall’ podcast with David Spade, Carvey expressed confusion regarding the controversy, stating, “I just didn’t understand the kerfuffle, only because to me, I just saw it as what we call... a joke!”

The controversy stemmed from a segment in which Gillis mocked women’s gym attire, using a derogatory term to describe their clothing. The remarks drew criticism from social media users and public figures, including actor Dan Levy and former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim.

Carvey, who was a defining performer for the show from 1986 to 1993, argued that jokes should not be interpreted as literal statements. While he noted that the material might have been better suited for a comedy club given the show’s typically younger female audience, he maintained that the intent was comedic rather than a literal commentary on women.
