Dana-Farber breaks ground on $1.7B cancer hospital in Boston

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has officially broken ground on the Lavine Bekenstein Cancer Hospital in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area. The $1.7 billion project will create the region’s only inpatient hospital dedicated exclusively to cancer care.

The 450,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in 2031 and will feature 300 inpatient beds across ten floors. Designed to integrate clinical care with groundbreaking research, the hospital aims to improve patient outcomes by providing a standalone environment specifically tailored to the needs of cancer patients and their families.

The project marks a significant shift in local healthcare dynamics. Dana-Farber is moving away from its traditional practice of admitting patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital to forge a new clinical partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This collaboration will create an interconnected campus to support coordinated outpatient care, inpatient services, and scientific discovery.
