Farid Basharat disputes UFC decision to decline contract renewal

Controversy has emerged following the UFC’s decision not to renew the contract of undefeated bantamweight Farid Basharat, who holds a 16-0 professional record and a 7-0 record within the promotion. During a press conference in Edmonton, UFC President Dana White stated that while he would not disclose specific details, there is “definitely a reason” for the non-renewal, suggesting it could involve issues with matchmakers or a fighter’s conduct.

Basharat has denied these implications, stating he has not been offered new opponents or contract dates since his last appearance. He suggested the promotion may be prioritizing aggressive, high-finish fighters over technical athletes, arguing that the UFC is “manufacturing a fan base” that values blood and first-round finishes over high-quality, competitive fighting.

Other fighters have weighed in on the situation. Muhammad Mokaev disputed the vague explanations provided by the promotion, placing blame on TKO and Paramount rather than Dana White. Meanwhile, former contender Zac Pauga suggested the move reflects a broader trend where the organization may value entertainment and knockout potential over technical skill.
