Danail Krapchev: Bulgarian journalist and revolutionary killed in 1944

On September 10, 1944, prominent Bulgarian journalist, publisher, and revolutionary Danail Krapchev was killed in Gorna Dzhumaya during a period of communist terror. Krapchev was the director of the influential daily newspaper ‘Zora’ and was known for his staunch patriotism and critical articles regarding the Soviet Union and Bolshevik movements.

Krapchev had a long history of political and revolutionary activity, including membership in the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (VMRO). Before his death, he had survived multiple assassination attempts by communist agents. Following his killing, a People's Court sentence was issued to legalize the act, but the Bulgarian Supreme Court later overturned this conviction in February 1994.

Born in Prilep in 1880, Krapchev was a graduate of Sofia University with a degree in history. Throughout his career, he edited several significant publications, including ‘Ilynden’, ‘Vardar’, and ‘Balgarin’, establishing himself as a major figure in Balkan journalism.
