Danantara considers importing used Japanese commuter trains
Danantara is considering the import of used electric commuter trains (KRL) from Japan to address urgent public transportation needs in Indonesia. Dony Oskaria, COO of Danantara and Head of State-Owned Enterprise Regulation, stated that the option is being evaluated alongside local production and new imports to balance supply with demand.
While the government continues to support the transformation and strengthening of PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) for domestic production, current local capacity is deemed insufficient to meet growing requirements. The potential influx of additional rolling stock is intended to support existing lines in the Jabodetabek area and upcoming electrification projects on the Jakarta-Cikampek, Jakarta-Sukabumi, and Jakarta-Merak routes.
Oskaria is scheduled to discuss the cost-benefit analysis of this proposal with Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi to determine the most effective way to accelerate public transport expansion.
