Danbury leaders respond to major ICE enforcement operation

Connecticut leaders and community members are responding to a significant escalation in immigration enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Danbury. Officials estimate that at least 70 residents in Danbury were detained during a series of operations last week, with the number of detentions potentially reaching hundreds across the state.

Local officials, including Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves, Senator Richard Blumenthal, and Governor Ned Lamont, have expressed concern over the impact on the community. Business owners have reported a decline in customers, describing the downtown area as a “ghost town,” while residents have expressed fear regarding attending work and sending children to school.

Democratic leaders have criticized the administration, noting that while promises were made to target individuals with serious criminal records, the current enforcement appears to be affecting a broader segment of the diverse population.
