Dane Myers and Tommy Pham clash over defensive metrics

Cincinnati Reds center fielder Dane Myers and former outfielder Tommy Pham engaged in a social media dispute following a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The conflict began after Myers missed a potential final out in the ninth inning, which contributed to a 10-9 loss for the Reds.

Pham, currently a minor leaguer for the Philadelphia Phillies, suggested on X that Myers missed the catch because he was attempting to “steal” the play to improve his Wins Above Replacement (WAR) defensive metrics. Pham argued that players are increasingly “gaming the system” to boost their statistical value.

Myers responded by defending his professionalism, noting that he had previously coordinated defensive shading with left fielder TJ Friedl. Myers dismissed the accusations of selfishness, stating that Pham was “talking like an average fan” and emphasizing that despite the tactical coordination, the “play still has to be made.”
