Dangote East Africa Refinery construction advances in Lamu
Construction for the proposed Dangote East Africa Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, has progressed with the arrival of a second shipment of heavy machinery. The vessel MV Great Glory arrived at the Port of Lamu on 19 October, carrying 154 pieces of equipment. This follows a previous delivery in late September involving approximately 2,930 metric tonnes of construction materials.
The project, which held its groundbreaking ceremony on 30 September, is designed to be a major petroleum-processing and petrochemical complex. The refinery aims to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day to serve Kenya and the broader East African region.
In addition to refining, the integrated industrial complex is planned to include a 1,000 MW power plant, as well as facilities for fertiliser and chemical production. Construction is expected to take approximately 40 months, with operations targeted to begin in early 2030.
