Dangote Group prepares $16 billion Lamu refinery amid Kenyan land dispute

Aliko Dangote’s Dangote Group is preparing to launch a $16 billion oil refinery in Lamu, Kenya, designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The project, part of the LAPSSET corridor, aims to bolster fuel security across East Africa and is expected to create approximately 60,000 jobs. Heavy construction machinery from China has already arrived at Lamu Port in preparation for the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for September 30, 2026.

However, the project faces legal and social challenges. A group of 133 residents from Chandavai has filed a lawsuit in the Malindi Environment and Land Court, alleging the unlawful takeover of ancestral lands without adequate compensation or resettlement plans. While the court has not halted the scheduled groundbreaking, Justice Jane Onyango ordered that the status quo be maintained on the disputed parcel (LR No. 13061) until a hearing on October 14, 2026. This order restricts certain activities on that specific plot but does not stop the overall project launch.

Aliko Dangote has dismissed the legal challenges as routine for large-scale African infrastructure projects, stating that the group is prepared to navigate such disputes. President William Ruto is expected to lead the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing the refinery's potential to drive industrialization and regional energy independence.
