Dangote Refinery Ramps Up to 700,000 bpd, Boosting Nigeria's Energy Self‑Sufficiency

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals increased its crude processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its 650,000‑bpd name‑plate. The ramp‑up is part of a strategy to more than double output to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months, positioning the plant to become the world’s largest refinery by 2028.

Vice‑President for Oil and Gas Devakumar Edwin said the expansion will “boost Nigeria’s energy self‑sufficiency, eliminate the country’s dependence on imported refined products and strengthen its position as a regional export hub.” The refinery now supplies petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other products to domestic markets and exports to several African nations, Europe, the United States and Saudi Arabia. In April it became the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel.

The higher output is helping to stabilise regional fuel supplies amid Middle‑East tensions and easing pressure on Nigeria’s foreign‑exchange reserves. Plans also include downstream feedstock production such as LPG, polypropylene and linear alkylbenzene, and a longer‑term vision of expanding capacity to about 2.1 million bpd with a new East‑African facility, promising job creation and improved trade balances.
