Dangote Refinery drives sevenfold surge in Nigeria’s petroleum exports

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is fundamentally transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape, driving a sevenfold increase in the country’s seaborne petroleum product exports since 2023. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Nigeria’s seaborne shipments averaged 561,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the second quarter of 2026, a sharp rise from the 2023 annual average of 79,000 bpd.

This shift is supported by the refinery’s recent expansion, which increased its crude distillation capacity from 650,000 bpd to 700,000 bpd in February 2026. While the facility has boosted domestic self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports, challenges remain. The refinery has noted that rising petrol imports—accounting for approximately 43% of Nigeria’s supply in July 2026—have created inventory management difficulties, occasionally forcing the export of surplus fuel.

Furthermore, the refinery faces economic hurdles regarding crude sourcing. Management has indicated that it sometimes pays more for Nigerian crude than for imported alternatives due to domestic pricing structures. To fund further growth, Dangote has filed for a major initial public offering (IPO) expected to close by October 2026, which could be the largest in African market history.
