Dangote Refinery central to Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy plan

Nigeria’s 700,000‑barrel‑per‑day Dangote Refinery is being promoted by the federal government as a cornerstone of the country’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy. Minister of State for Industry John Owan Enoh visited the integrated complex in Lagos and said the plant is a key example of large‑scale manufacturing that can create jobs, add value to raw materials and boost industrial competitiveness.

The refinery now supplies roughly 80 % of domestic petrol demand and, in April, exported a record 372,000 bpd of refined products to markets in West Africa, Europe, the United States and Asia, marking a shift from Nigeria’s historic status as a net importer of refined fuel. At full capacity the facility will consume about 2.5 % of globally traded crude oil – roughly equivalent to 10 % of United States refining capacity.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to commence an initial public offering, targeting a September listing that would become Africa’s largest stock‑market offering. The IPO follows a $2.5 billion private placement that was 3.7 times oversubscribed, underscoring strong investor appetite for the project.
