Dangote Refinery IPO prompts investor due diligence advice
Analysts and commentators are providing guidance to prospective investors ahead of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) in Nigeria. Financial analyst Hesed Sign has advised Nigerians to look beyond the reputation of the refinery’s founder and instead conduct thorough due diligence by studying the prospectus, financial statements, valuations, and potential risks.
Sign emphasized that the IPO is a capital-market transaction intended to raise funds rather than a charity initiative. She noted that the refinery has utilized both debt and equity financing, highlighting that equity can strengthen the company’s balance sheet and reduce reliance on borrowing.
To participate in the Nigerian capital market, investors must navigate specific regulatory requirements. This includes obtaining a Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) account through a licensed stockbroker recognized by the Security and Exchange Commission. The CSCS account serves as a digital depository for shares and provides legal proof of ownership. Additionally, investors require a Clearing House Number (CHN), which acts as a unique identifier across the Nigerian financial system.
