Dangote Refinery IPO targets massive retail participation in Nigeria

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, is advocating for increased domestic production in Nigeria to bolster economic resilience, create jobs, and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

Central to this economic landscape is the ongoing Initial Public Offering (IPO) for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE. The offer, which opened on September 14 and is scheduled to close on October 13, involves 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at N525 each. If fully subscribed, the move could raise approximately N2.15 trillion for refinery expansion plans.

The IPO has seen significant interest from retail and institutional investors, marketed as an ‘IPO for the People’ due to a low minimum subscription of 10 shares (N5,250). To encourage participation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation launched a Student Share Grant Initiative, providing an additional 10 shares at no cost to eligible university students who subscribe to the minimum amount. Other community initiatives, such as those by the Biodun Coker Foundation, have also provided funds to help grassroots members participate in the offering.

While the IPO represents a major milestone for the Nigerian Exchange and domestic capital mobilization, analysts note that investors face uncertainties regarding the timing of meaningful returns and the lack of a public market history for the refinery.
