Daniel Billings sentencing begins for murder of Molly Ticehurst
Sentencing submissions have concluded for Daniel Billings, who pleaded guilty to the April 2024 murder of Molly Ticehurst in Forbes. During the hearings at the NSW Supreme Court in Orange, the court heard chilling video and audio recordings made by Billings both before and after the attack. Forensic psychiatrist Olav Nielssen testified that the recordings were “goodbye videos from a person who was going to die by suicide,” suggesting Billings was suffering from a depressive illness.
Evidence presented to the court revealed that Billings had previously threatened Ticehurst, telling her he would “get to her quicker” than the police. Text messages showed Ticehurst asking him why he wanted to kill her weeks before the murder. Billings had been released on conditional bail shortly before the attack, despite police opposition.
The murder of Ticehurst became a catalyst for national discussions on gendered violence and led to the introduction of bail reforms known as “Molly’s Law.” During the proceedings, Ticehurst’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements. Her father, Tony Ticehurst, addressed Billings directly, expressing the profound loss of his daughter. Justice Natalie Adams is expected to deliver the sentence on September 11, 2026.
