Murder of NSW childcare educator Molly Ticehurst prompts sentencing delay and $1.3 m compensation payout

Daniel Billings, who pleaded guilty to murdering 28‑year‑old childcare worker Molly Ticehurst in Forbes, NSW in April 2024, will be sentenced on 3–4 September 2026. The NSW Supreme Court moved the hearing forward by two days to allow a forensic psychiatrist to give evidence after the originally scheduled date became unavailable.

In a separate civil case, Ticehurst’s father, Tony, was awarded more than AU$1.3 million in workers‑compensation damages from Peabody Energy for a spinal injury sustained while operating a coal‑dump truck at Wilpinjong Mine in 2021.

The murder, which attracted national attention, has fueled a broader debate on domestic‑violence prevention and led to amendments to NSW bail laws, including stricter “show‑cause” thresholds and electronic monitoring of accused offenders.
