Daniel Briceño faces arrest for contempt of court in Bogotá

The 40th Criminal Circuit Court of Bogotá has confirmed, in a second instance, a one-day arrest sanction against Representative Daniel Briceño for contempt of court. The ruling follows Briceño's failure to comply with a judicial order to retract statements made regarding Gloria Cuartas, the former director of the Peace Agreement Implementation Unit.

The legal dispute originated from allegations made by Briceño concerning the purported use of approximately 250,000 million pesos for political events during Cuartas's administration. Cuartas sought legal recourse, arguing the claims damaged her reputation and honor. While Briceño posted a video on social media, the court determined the publication did not fully meet the specific terms required for a valid retraction.

In addition to the arrest, the decision includes a fine equivalent to one monthly minimum wage. Briceño has challenged the proceedings, filing a motion for nullity and claiming he was not properly notified of the judicial actions, asserting he only learned of the decision through social media.
