Daniel Bukszpan to release book on heavy metal’s ‘Big Four’

Author Daniel Bukszpan will release a new book titled ‘Heavy Metal’s Big Four: How Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, And Megadeth Reshaped Metal’ on November 10, 2026. Published by Motorbooks, the 192-page hardcover provides a year-by-year account of how the four bands transitioned thrash metal from an underground movement to a dominant global genre.

The book traces the history of the bands from their 1981 origins through lineup changes, landmark albums, and major tours. It highlights specific influential works such as Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’, Megadeth’s ‘Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?’, Anthrax’s ‘Among the Living’, and Slayer’s ‘Reign in Blood’.

Beyond the music, Bukszpan examines the cultural evolution of the scene, including the impact of tape-trading networks, underground zines, MTV exposure, and major-label breakthroughs. The book is priced at $40 in the United States and $53 in Canada.
