Daniel Buren unveils installation in Giverny to mark Monet centenary

To commemorate the centenary of Claude Monet’s death in 2026, the Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny has commissioned a new installation by contemporary artist Daniel Buren. Titled ‘Plantation’, the work is designed to create a dialogue between Buren’s geometric, striped aesthetic and the iconic landscapes famously captured by Monet.

The installation is spread across the entire estate, including the museum’s halls, the gardens, and the hill overlooking the site. Buren’s work utilizes his signature colorful stripes and weather vanes to interact with the natural light and seasonal variations of the landscape. Curators note that while Buren’s rigorous protocol differs from Monet’s painterly touch, both artists share a profound interest in light, color, and the study of series and repetitions.

‘Plantation’ will be on display through November 1, 2026, as part of a broader series of contemporary art interventions in Normandy marking the centennial.
