Daniel Dăianu warns of Romania's budget deficit and tax evasion
Daniel Dăianu, president of the Fiscal Council, has issued a warning regarding Romania's budget deficit, which exceeded 9% of GDP in 2024. He emphasized the need to combat large-scale tax evasion, describing it as a 'cancer' that must be destroyed to prevent severe economic and social consequences during fiscal corrections.
Dăianu noted that Romania must reduce its dependence on loans and improve tax collection to address the deficit, which is a barrier to joining the eurozone. He highlighted that interest costs on public debt have reached approximately 60 billion lei annually. The official target is to reduce the deficit to 6.2% of GDP by 2026.
