Daniel Noboa appoints Daniel Correia to lead Ecuador's National Intelligence Center

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has announced that Daniel Correia will take charge of the National Intelligence Center (CNI). This appointment follows the death of Michele Sensi-Contugi, who died in a helicopter accident in Kenya on August 19.

Noboa stated that the structure of the CNI will remain unchanged and that Correia will serve in a temporary capacity. A final decision regarding a permanent director will be made after the current electoral campaign concludes. Following Sensi-Contugi's death, Luis Carlos Ávila Chávez had been previously designated as the acting general director.

During a radio interview, Noboa defended the CNI against social media criticisms labeling it a ‘troll center’. He credited the agency with critical successes, including the capture and subsequent extradition to the United States of José Adolfo Macías, known as ‘Fito’, as well as the detention of gang leader Darío Javier Peñafiel Nieto, alias ‘Topo’.
