Daniel Obajtek proposes major consolidation of Polish state companies

Daniel Obajtek, the former CEO of Orlen and a Member of the European Parliament, has presented a new economic vision for the Law and Justice (PiS) party. During a party congress on October 3, Obajtek proposed a massive consolidation of state-owned enterprises to increase their financial leverage and international competitiveness.

Key elements of the proposal include merging energy, logistics, railway, and manufacturing sectors. Obajtek suggested that the energy sector should eventually be dominated by only two large state-owned groups. He also advocated for integrating the fertilizer industry with Orlen to stabilize production costs through direct access to gas.

Furthermore, Obajtek proposed expanding consolidation into the banking and insurance sectors. To fund large-scale infrastructure and energy projects, he suggested a model where private capital—estimated at over 500 billion PLN—could participate in strategic investments through a 50/50 partnership with the state. He also claimed these measures could potentially reduce energy prices by approximately 35 percent.
