Daniel Perez pledges non-interference in Brazil elections

Daniel Perez, the U.S. nominee for Ambassador to Brazil, has stated he does not intend to interfere in Brazil’s upcoming October elections. In recent interviews, Perez emphasized that the electoral process belongs to Brazilian citizens and affirmed he will work with whoever is elected.

Perez, a former Florida House Speaker appointed by Donald Trump, is currently designated as ‘Ambassador-Designate’ following Senate approval. However, he awaits ‘agrément’—formal diplomatic approval—from the Brazilian government. This has led to a diplomatic impasse between Washington and Brasília.

The tension escalated after the U.S. announced Perez’s nomination before the customary prior consultation with the host country. In a retaliatory move, the U.S. Department of State revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti.

While the U.S. has begun internal procedural steps to prepare Perez for his mission, the diplomatic standoff persists. Perez noted that Brazil is a vital commercial partner for the United States and expressed hope to resolve current gaps and address economic issues, including trade tariffs.
