Daniel Salcedo faces potential extradition hearing to the United States

Ecuador's National Court of Justice has scheduled a hearing for September 9, 2026, to address the potential extradition of Daniel Salcedo to the United States. Salcedo, who is currently serving over 35 years in prison and is involved in the Magnicidio FV case, will be asked whether he consents to the extradition or intends to exhaust legal resources to oppose it.

Interior Minister John Reimberg indicated that Salcedo is part of a group of detainees slated for international transfer to face foreign judicial processes. Salcedo is reportedly sought by U.S. authorities for crimes including money laundering and trafficking. Investigations suggest he operated a virtual bank, known as “el banco del Bello,” which allegedly facilitated money laundering for politicians, businessmen, and military personnel, potentially involving the purchase of assets in the United States.

Other individuals, including witness Ronald Herrera and Roberto Carlos Álvarez Vera, are also facing potential extradition. Legal experts have raised concerns regarding how Salcedo's departure might impact the ongoing Magnicidio FV investigation, as Ecuadorian law generally does not allow for trials to proceed in the absence of the accused.
