Daniel Salcedo to face hearing over US extradition request

The National Court of Justice (CNJ) has summoned Daniel Salcedo Bonilla to a hearing on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, to determine his position regarding an extradition request from the United States.

During the hearing, judges will ask Salcedo if he accepts voluntary extradition or if he intends to oppose the request. If he accepts voluntarily, the process could be resolved within weeks. If he opposes, the legal proceedings may extend for several months as he exercises his right to defense through Ecuadorian legal mechanisms.

Salcedo is currently held at El Encuentro Prison in Santa Elena, having been transferred there from Quito in June 2026. He is serving an accumulated sentence of over 34 years in Ecuador for crimes including money laundering, embezzlement, procedural fraud, and organized crime. Following the judicial process, the final decision regarding the extradition will rest with the President of the Republic.
