Daniel Sancho awaits critical ruling on life sentence in Thailand

Daniel Sancho, currently serving a life sentence in Thailand for the premeditated murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta, awaits a decisive ruling from the Koh Samui Provincial Court. While a specific date for the reading of the sentence has not been set, defense attorney Marcos García-Montes confirmed that the Phuket Court of Appeal has already drafted and sent the ruling to the local court.

The legal process presents four potential outcomes: maintaining the life sentence, reducing the penalty, ordering a retrial, or increasing the sentence. The defense continues to argue that Arrieta’s death was not premeditated and is seeking to reclassify the crime as manslaughter to facilitate a potential return to Spain.

Sancho is currently held in the high-security Surat Thani Prison, a facility characterized by strict schedules, limited communication, and high overcrowding. Despite the isolation and the harshness of the Thai penitentiary system, reports indicate he receives regular correspondence from various individuals offering moral and financial support.
