Daniel Sancho's Thai murder conviction remains under appeal three years after killing

Spanish citizen Daniel Sancho was sentenced to life imprisonment in Thailand for the 2023 murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta on Koh Samui island. The case, which attracted extensive media coverage in Spain, is now in the hands of the Phuket Appeals Court, which has not yet set a date to announce its decision.

Sancho's defence team, including lawyers Carmen Balfagón and Marcos García‑Montes, has publicly acknowledged that earlier legal strategies may have delayed a possible transfer of the prisoner to Spain. Balfagón said it would have been "easier to accept the sentence" and would have allowed the transfer process to begin. The appeal, filed 16 months after the conviction, remains pending, keeping any international transfer mechanisms on hold.

Spanish journalist Susana Román reported from Koh Samui, highlighting the challenges of covering the trial and the limited access granted to the press.
