Daniel Scioli faces controversy over cruise ship promotion

Argentina's Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Sports, Daniel Scioli, has drawn criticism following his participation in a reception for the Seaventure, a polar expedition vessel, at the Mar del Plata Naval Base. While the government presented the ship's arrival as a victory for international tourism and economic growth, the vessel's operator, 66° Expeditions, uses British nomenclature for the Falkland Islands in its promotional materials.

The company's catalogs and digital platforms refer to Puerto Argentino as ‘Stanley’ and West Point for Isla Remolinos, while describing the area as having a ‘markedly British character.’ This has sparked political and legal debate regarding the alignment of official government actions with Argentina's sovereignty claims over the islands.

Despite the controversy, Scioli emphasized the economic benefits of cruise tourism, noting that passengers and crews stimulate local commerce, transport, and gastronomy. He expressed an ambition to reach one million cruise passengers annually by integrating various Argentine ports into international circuits.
