Daniel Zontea addresses cyclist safety and police enforcement in Romania

Romanian police officer and cycling enthusiast Daniel Zontea has addressed public perceptions regarding police interactions with cyclists. Responding to claims that law enforcement targets cyclists, Zontea clarified that police interventions are directed at dangerous behaviors rather than the use of bicycles itself.

Zontea highlighted a concerning statistic, noting that approximately 100 cyclists lose their lives annually in road accidents in Romania. He identified several high-risk factors contributing to these fatalities, including riding under the influence of alcohol, cycling on European roads at night without proper lighting, and failing to signal during direction changes.

Comparing traffic police to customs officers, Zontea explained that authorities do not target specific groups, but rather those who violate safety rules. He emphasized that cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and urged them to focus on following traffic regulations to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.
