Daniele Comboni: Italian missionary and bishop commemorated

October 10 marks the feast day of San Daniele Comboni, an Italian Catholic missionary and bishop known for his extensive work in Central Africa. Born in Limone sul Garda in 1831, Comboni dedicated his life to the mission in Africa, specifically in the region of Sudan.

Comboni is celebrated for his strategic vision, ‘Save Africa with Africa,’ which emphasized empowering indigenous populations to lead their own religious and social development. He founded the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus and the Comboni Missionary Sisters to support this goal. His work included establishing schools and training local professionals such as doctors, teachers, and clergy.

Throughout his career, Comboni faced significant hardships, including tropical diseases and the struggle against the slave trade. He died in Khartoum in 1881 at the age of 50. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
