President Sergio Mattarella urges focus on citizens' issues amid electoral tensions FAST-MOVING
President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella addressed the press at the traditional ceremony of the Ventaglio. He warned that the current electoral tensions, however “intempestive”, must not divert attention from the everyday problems of ordinary citizens and called on parties to prioritize democratic participation, noting a growing trend of voter abstention.
Mattarella condemned the recent violent clashes in Val di Susa, describing the aggression as a “lethal virus for democracy and social life” and urging a prompt, unequivocal response. He stressed that in a civilly ordered society individual behaviour must respect common laws, warning that adapting legislation case‑by‑case would undermine state security.
He also spoke about Italy’s role in a reformed multilateral system, urging European cooperation to give the system “solidity” suitable to today’s reality. Regarding defence, he affirmed that a common European defence “is not a threat to anyone; it is a tool to guarantee peace”. Finally, he highlighted a widening global conflict stretching from the Mediterranean through the Gulf and the Indian Ocean to the war in Europe, emphasizing its worldwide dimension and responsibilities.
