Danielle Smith marks Alberta Day as separation referendum approaches

During Alberta Day celebrations at Calgary’s Heritage Park, Premier Danielle Smith addressed the anniversary of the province joining Confederation while avoiding direct discussion of provincial separation. Smith emphasized Alberta’s economic role, stating, “We are Canada’s economic engine. More than ever, Canadians understand what Alberta brings to the country.”

Smith has scheduled a vote for Oct. 19, which will ask residents if the province should remain in Canada or proceed with a second, binding referendum on leaving the country. In her speech, she focused on shared values, noting, “Despite our differences, we have far more in common than what divides us.”

While independence advocates were present at the festivities, many attendees focused on the historical significance of the province's official entry into Canada on Sept. 1, 1905.
