Danielle Thumann Severs nominated to the FCC by Donald Trump
President Donald Trump has nominated Danielle Thumann Severs to serve as a Republican commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Thumann Severs currently serves as senior counsel to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and has previously held roles within the agency and the private telecommunications sector.
If confirmed by the Senate, Thumann Severs will serve a five-year term retroactive to July 1, 2024. Her appointment would shift the commission's balance to three Republicans and one Democrat, Anna Gomez. Legal experts suggest the nomination may serve as an “insurance policy” to maintain a Republican majority should existing members depart.
The move has also drawn attention to the status of Commissioner Anna Gomez, a Democrat and critic of the administration. Analysts note that a Republican majority could theoretically allow the administration to remove Gomez while still maintaining the three-member quorum required for the commission to function.
